Composition

My year at the Pauline Oliveros Foundation (1993/1994) in Kingston, New York, had a profound impact on me. Meeting Pauline as a musician and composer was very inspiring. I lived in the house of performance artist Linda Montano, who was teaching in Texas that year. As a Swiss woman, this house presented me with some unusual challenges. For example, it had a window made entirely of plastic and a heating system that worked from the ceiling. Last but not least, during a nighttime storm, a tree landed on the ground just a few centimeters away from the gas pipe… – My encounters with dancer Julie Lyon and percussionist Jason Finkelman introduced me to new styles of playing and unfamiliar instruments. – I will also never forget the afternoon in front of the UN building in New York, where I asked women if they could say “hello” to me in their native language: I collected 22 “hellos,” which formed the basis for 15 piano pieces.

Back in Switzerland, I founded the improvisation duo KRAK together with clarinetist Valentin Vecellio, which performed at various locations in Switzerland for many years.

In 2000, I had the opportunity to compose a piece for choir, instruments, and a dancer for the choir “Contrapunkt” in Basel. It premiered at the Elisabethenkirche.

I wrote my first pieces while living at the Pauline Oliveros Foundation in Kingston, N.Y. (August 1993 to July 1994)

One day Pauline showed up in my studio, overviewing all the little notes scattered on the floor and she mentioned: „Well, this looks like a score“ – et voilà – here I was – the composer!

I am composing for choirs, small ensembles or solo performers.
